Last night I suddenly remembered that it would soon be your eighteenth birthday, so I am writing this letter.
When you were here last time, you told me how much you admired our Russian lace, and I sent you some handkerchiefs as a little present.

I have to confess that when I first realized your birthday was just around the corner, my first impulse was to send you a birthday card. In fact, impelled by that thought I went to look at some of them at the nearest post-office. I looked through them but not one of them seemed good enough.
